Pagliacci e Cavalleria Rusticana alla Scala International

Multilingual review:

- Giuditta Pasta

Last Tuesday was a “difficult” night at La Scala, Milan. The new production of the traditional Verismo coupling Pagliacci/Cavalleria rusticana got a mixed reception, with strong applause and even stronger boos, mainly addressed to the vocal soloists, with the notable exception of Luciana d’Intino, and to director Mario Martone.
Conductor Daniel Harding had a good success and he deserved it: under his baton the Orchestra and Chorus of La Scala worked much better than with such conductors as Barenboim, Gatti, Dudamel, just to name a few, even if the sound was not Italian enough for this music and in Cavalleria, in particular, there was a patent lack of Mediterranean passion and inspiration. Perhaps Maestro Harding is still too young and unexperienced to achieve the optimal balance between tradition and innovation in this often underestimated, but rather difficult repertory.
Many efforts, but not in the good direction, came from the leading singers in Pagliacci. Tenor José Cura showed his usual vulgar and brutal way of “singing” with little, if any, traces of what his voice used to be. In short, a disaster. Even worse the Nedda, Oksana Dyka, who in spite of supporting singing agencies and “friendly” specialized press has neither the voice nor the technique to sing in a theater like La Scala, or in any theater of some importance. Often out of tune, with a grotesquely pumped lower register and a total lack of legato, the singer will be heard again at La Scala next month as Tosca (!).
Luciana d’Intino as Santuzza sang with the remains of a powerful mezzo voice and reminded the audience – and her colleagues, in particular tenor Salvatore Licitra/Turiddu – that a professional singer needs very little voice to get a triumph, if he or she has got some technique and artistic sensibility left. The latter was not the case for Mr. Licitra, who is fresher, but not more refined or adequate, than Mr. Cura.
Martone signed an interesting production, with a modern-day setting for Leoncavallo (a rather usual solution, nowadays) and a traditional, yet essential and suggestive mise en scene for Mascagni. It is not a show that will change the history of opera interpretation, but a good effort to say “something new” without the usual, and usurated, “coats” of the German tradition or the boring visual effects of too many recent productions seen at La Scala. - Antonio Tamburini
